FPD OPEN HOUSE - May 17, 2002
Chairmen Cheryl Haughey and Julie Floyd would
like to say thanks to the many Alumni volunteers and P.D. personnel who
helped make the 2nd Annual Open House at the P.D. a big success. A special
thanks goes to Robert King and Lynne Shuyler for building a terrific frame
and holder for the officers' new trading cards, given out during National
Police Memorial Week. This display, as well as the pictures of the recent
Awards Dinner winners and accompanying plaques and special Centennial
plaque, were hung in the west lobby and north side by Sgt. LaRue and Grant
Cottingham. Posters were displayed showing some of the P.D. personnel and
activities of the Alumni during the past year.
Information displays were set up in the City Council Chambers, including the
SADD Chapter from Frisco High School with Karen Kaighan, Advisor, and MADD
of North Texas, Linda Jeffries, Coordinator. Officer Toni Adams had a
terrific Shattered Dreams display along with showing the videotape of the
recent project. Many Open House goers were gathered around the audio/visual
unit watching the special presentation compiled by some students at Frisco
High School. Nickie Contreras and Kimberly Girard of Frisco's Future brought
information about their services and handed out pamphlets about the upcoming
School Supply Drive. Thanks also to those manning the COPS, Neighborhood
Watch, Good Neighbor, CPA & Alumni, door prize and fundraising tables.
Thanks to John Rogers for operating the McGruff Robot, Grant Cottingham and
Merrie Hultman for dressing in the McGruff and Red E. Fox costumes. Thanks
to Allyson Frederick and James Shaw for bringing the 9-1-1 game and goodie
bags for the kids.
One of the highlights of the evening was the special opening ceremony. Ron
Gentry, Store Manager of Brookshire's Grocery, sang the Star Spangled Banner
for the ceremony. Mayor Mike Simpson read the proclamation for the P.D. for
National Police Memorial Week and Chief of Police, Todd Renshaw, gave other
comments. The family of Officer Joe Murphy, the only officer at Frisco P.D.
to be killed in the line of duty, attended the Open House and were given a
U.S. Flag that had been flown over the capital in Officer Murphy's honor.
They were quite pleased with the memorial tribute to Officer Murphy, which
hangs in the west lobby of the P.D.
An additional surprise came during the evening by a young man named Donovan
Foehser. He and Dad. Jerry, brought a huge yellow box filled with stuffed
bears to the P.D. Donovan collected the 156 bears on his own and wanted to
give them to our officers to hand out to needy children. Donovan and his Dad
were introduced to Mayor and Mrs. Simpson, Chief Renshaw, and enjoyed
meeting the SWAT Team personnel on hand. Donovan attends Smith Elementary
School. What a special young man!
A special thank you goes to Chaplain Stan Brasuell and many of the members
of Fellowship of Frisco who graciously provided wonderful home baked
cookies, which were served at the Refreshment table during the Open House.
Additionally, the Fellowship of Frisco provided the new badge patches that
will be worn by the officers on their jackets in the near future.
The "Feed The Force" dinner was a big success with barbecue and buns
provided by Wes Hutchins of Randy White's Hall of Fame BBQ. We had lots of
other great food provided by Alumni volunteers.
Officer Devinney showed off the new motorcycle being used in Patrol. Sgt.
LaRue brought out the Beat The Heat racecar; Officer Hollahan showed the
laser radar to visitors, and everyone enjoyed looking at the different fleet
vehicles. Some of the SWAT Team setup in the conference room, much to the
liking of all the kids!
